ABOUT THE COLLEGE
Palo Verde College is a publicly supported 2-year college located in the beautiful Southeastern California desert. Yearly enrollment is approximately 7,000 students (full and part-time).

LOCATION
Palo Verde College is located in the City of Blythe at one of the busiest entrance points to California. The college is located in a desert oasis adjacent to the beautiful Colorado River and the Palo Verde Valley. Blythe, and the fertile Palo Verde Valley, is primarily a farming and ranching area. Boating, fishing and hunting attract many tourists. The Palo Verde Valley is centrally located between Phoenix and Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Mexican border. The valley’s great climate, with more than 350 days of sunshine and mild winters, attracts thousands of winter visitors every year.NATURE OF THE POSITION
Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities & Operations, the Custodian performs cleaning work of the school buildings. The employee is responsible for the use of proper methods, materials and equipment in performing these duties.
Examples of Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and polishes various types of floors and furniture.
- Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
- Cleans restrooms and replaces laboratory supplies.
- Empties waster paper baskets, picks up debris, and removes trash to central area for pick-up.
- Cleans windows, screens, woodwork, walls, ceilings, furniture, and equipment.
- Cleans bulletin and blackboards.
- Sets up and arranges furniture and facilities as needed.
- Delivers supplies.
- Duties include occasional heavy lifting and working on ladders or scaffolding when washing windows, ceilings or when performing other work involving height.
- Performs related work as required. (The omission of specific statement of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or logical assignment to the position.)
- Maintains all buildings in proper sanitary condition and protects school property from loss, damage, defacement, and vandalism.
- Is on the alert for leaky faucets and gas valves, defective locks, and all such conditions which cause loss or create hazards, and reports such defects to the supervisor if he/she cannot correct.
- Performs all necessary custodial services prescribed, as well as moving of sullies, equipment and furniture in an efficient and uniform manner as possible in accordance with approved working schedule.
- Maintains friendly relationships with instructors, students and the general public and is obliging and helpful in every way in consistent with duties and the working schedule, as well as protects the safety of students in every way.
- Reports to the supervisor any violation of college rules, regulations, or laws.
- Exercises economy in the use of supplies and utility services.
- Secures and locks all buildings as prescribed.
Educational/Experience Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of requirements for maintain college buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in janitorial work.
- Possession of skills and physical strength to operate floor scrubbing machines, floor polishing machines, wet and dry vacuum machines, and we and dry foam rug cleaning machines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of related work experience.
- Valid Drivers License.

- Able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and 90 pounds occasionally.
- Able to carry up to 60 pounds frequently and 90 pounds occasionally.
- Able to push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for back lateral flexion.
- Able to work in restricted spaces in a safe and effective manner.
- Able to with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction.
- Able to work with trees, plants, shrubs, flowers, soil, and turn without allergic reaction.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to perform fine maintenance procedures and operate both manual and power hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
- Able to operate a variety of powered and manual equipment commonly found in janitorial and custodial services in a safe and effective manner.
- The ability to drive a motor vehicle.
- The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
CLASSIFICATION/SALARY
- This is a substitute position. May include evening and weekend duty.
- Row 1 on the classified salary schedule.
