POSITION TITLE: Animal Technician I

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Transfer animals from dirty to clean caging, ensuring provision of appropriate feed, water, and bedding, and promptly notify appropriate personnel of abnormal conditions.
  • Conduct daily animal health observations, complete health reports identifying sick animals, and perform basic animal health treatments under veterinary staff direction.
  • Clean, sanitize, and autoclave caging, equipment, and refill water bottles; may also clean and replace excreta pans or pads.
  • Receive, autoclave, and prepare feed, bedding, and cages for use.
  • Maintain cagewash equipment, including cleaning screens, jets, and manifolds, performing preventative maintenance, and reporting maintenance needs.
  • Euthanize rodents according to written procedures.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • No experience necessary, but prefer one year animal care experience.
  • One to three years animal care experience can be substituted for a high school diploma/equivalent.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal relation skills.
  • Participation in weekend and holiday rotations is required.

Eligible for a promotion to Animal Technician II within 1 year anniversary of hire and actively working as Animal Technician I with no existing performance failures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to lift and handle equipment or materials up to 20 pounds; as well as perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists, and hands. This position may also include utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) and working in an environment that contains biohazardous materials. May also include stationary positioning for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $20 to $22 per hour, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
