Essential Job Duties
- Prepare surgical suite with appropriate physical setup according to procedure, including sterility validation, table location/positioning, equipment check, and surgical pack & supply acquisition
- Prepare patients for surgical procedures through standard aseptic clip, prep, scrub and draping techniques
- Maintain a sterile surgical environment and provide assistance during surgical procedures
- Break down surgical suite adhering to cleaning and disinfecting policies
- Maintain surgical equipment including; sterile surgical instruments, cautery, surgical lights, mayo stand, IWI, drills, microscope, portable C-ARM, and heating devices
- Assist in cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment
- Support various surgical services for SA & LA including Neurology, Soft Tissue, Orthopedic, Ophthalmology
- Maintain inventory of supplies used in surgical areas, restocking daily
- Maintain logs of all OSHA regulated equipment including surgical equipment, eye wash & shower stations and autoclaves
- Perform drug calculations for intra-op medication administration
- Management of isolation, antibiotic resistant and infectious disease patients
- Record and communicate a variety of data relating to surgical records/logs, surgical instrumentation and patient care with use of hospital information systems
- Coordinate prep, table time and procedural time with Anesthesia, Central Scheduling and Service teams to optimize patient care
- Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
- Maintaining a clean and working environment following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA, EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings

Other Required Qualifications
- Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting.
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
- Ability to provide high quality customer service.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
- Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
- Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
- Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a veterinary assistant in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
Required License or Certification
Valid NC Driver's License required
