THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN SOUTHERN MARYLAND.
The Robotics Software Engineer primarily supports UROC’s lead Project Engineer, faculty researchers, and student researchers at UMD’s Maryland Robotics Center (MRC) in pursuit of a project using multiple drones in an autonomous Multi-Agent System (MAS) to assist first responders in quickly reacting to an active shooter in an urban, campus environment. This MAS will leverage cutting-edge autonomy algorithms and stacks developed at UMD and employ 5G networks for command and control. This project is funded by an entrepreneurial donor interested in finding applications for these technologies as the foundation of a future enterprise. Intellectual property developed and experience gained may position the incumbent well for a ground-level role in a future startup.
The position also supports software development for a variety of autonomous MAS in other MRC-led projects working on diverse projects involving aerial and ground robots working together to solve a range of problems.
The successful candidate will be trained as a professional Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS, or drone) pilot and will participate in field experiments and operations involving MRC-focused and other projects.
The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland serves as the catalyst for high-quality research, innovation, and learning, preparing our students to create innovations that will address the 21st century Grand Challenges (e.g., energy, environment, security, and human health) and improve the human condition. The Clark School is dedicated to leading and transforming the engineering discipline and profession, to accelerating entrepreneurship, and to transforming research and learning activities into new innovations that benefit millions.
