About the Department

The Design Studies Program is positioned within the Department of Media Arts, Design and Technology at the College of Design at North Carolina State University, with allied academic departments of Graphic and Industrial Design, Landscape Architecture, and the School of Architecture. Students and faculty in Design Studies seek opportunities and challenge the status quo through design thinking, research, writing, and work on local and global issues that require innovative propositional thinking.

The Design Studies program in the Media Arts Design and Technology (MADTech) Department is a nationally recognized program known for its innovation interdisciplinary research and broad-based professional design education. The College of Design’s mission is to educate students to become designers and thought leaders creating a community for designers, researchers, and scholars.

Essential Job Duties

We invite applications for the role of Assistant Teaching Professor in Design Studies, beginning in January 2025 and running through May 2026 (9-month teaching schedule). The selected candidate will play a key role in advancing design education by teaching courses in areas such as design research, criticism, methodologies, design thinking, writing, history, and theory-based seminars.

In this position, you will teach up to 12 credits (3-4 courses) per semester, which may include both established courses and a new course developed based on your area of expertise. Familiarity with Design Studies pedagogy, discourse, and scholarship is required. Prior experience teaching undergraduate courses in design studies is preferred.

Key Responsibilities
  • Course Instruction: Deliver lectures, tutorials, and other instructional formats for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Student Evaluation: Assess and provide constructive feedback to students on coursework and exams.
  • Curriculum Development: Revise and update existing courses, including course design, content, structure, delivery methods, and assessment strategies.
  • Course Innovation: Create new teaching materials and methods, and develop course proposals.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure course design and delivery align with department and University standards.
  • Student Support: Mentor students on study skills, support their learning needs, and provide academic guidance.
  • Project Supervision: Oversee student projects, field trips, and placements.
  • Academic Advising: Advise Design Studies students, both individually and in groups.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Terminal Master’s degree in a field relevant to the specific area of instruction (i.e. Design, Design Studies, Design Theory or another design-related focus). or relevant master’s degree with professional practice in that related field.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability or aptitude in the areas specific to design studies courses
  • Demonstrated potential for directing activities specific to the courses to be taught.
  • Willingness to engage in departmental and University affairs
  • Demonstrated professional or scholarly competency with a mix of traditional and leading-edge technologies and methods.
  • Demonstrated engagement in the professional field and community
