About the Department

Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) is among the largest and most prominent in the nation. The department offers Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in both Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Aerospace Engineering (AE). The department also offers accelerated BS/MS degrees in both programs. Current research specialization in MAE includes dynamic systems and controls, vibrations, biomechanics, design optimization, smart materials and structures, precision engineering, MEMS and NEMS, advanced manufacturing, aerodynamics, UAV flight research, materials, renewable energy, combustion, hypersonics, propulsion, space exploration systems, and computational fluid dynamics.

The MAE department currently boasts 49 tenure-track faculty, six non-tenure track faculty, and 16 staff. The faculty is highly recognized with seven National Science Foundation CAREER Award recipients, four NSF RIA recipients, one NASA Early Career Faculty Award recipient, four ASME Fellows, seven AIAA Fellows, 20 members of the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers, and five named professors. The MAE Department has an enrollment of over 1,100 undergraduates and 400 graduate students and has conferred over 4,000 degrees since 2000. The department is housed in Engineering Building III, a four-story, 250,000-square-foot facility built in 2010. An annex houses wind tunnels, an anechoic chamber, internal combustion engine dynamometers, and additional research labs. NC State’s location on Centennial Campus, combined with its proximity to the Research Triangle Park and neighboring universities, provides extensive opportunities for academic and industrial interaction and collaboration.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) invites applications for a Lecturer position. The primary responsibility of the Lecturer will be to deliver high-quality undergraduate and/or graduate instruction for the department, supporting teaching needs during the fall, spring, and/or summer semesters. Instructional areas may include core topics in mechanical and aerospace engineering, as well as emerging fields relevant to the department’s strategic goals.

Applicants are encouraged to specify courses within the MAE curriculum they are qualified to teach or propose specialized topics aligned with their expertise.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging and effective course content for undergraduate and graduate students in accordance with the department’s educational objectives.
  • Develop and prepare course materials, assignments, and assessments, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Provide mentorship, academic support, and career guidance to students.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to enhance and modernize course offerings, ensuring alignment with industry trends and research advancements.
  • Incorporate innovative teaching methods and technologies to support diverse learning styles and create an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Participate in department meetings and contribute to curriculum development and program planning.

This is a part-time, contract position contingent on departmental needs.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Senior Lecturer must have at least 5 years college level teaching experience and a Masters Degree or an equivalent degree in Mechanical and/or Aerospace Engineering or Doctoral degree or equivalent in the appropriate field depending on department needs.

  • Lecturer must have Masters Degree or an equivalent degree in Mechanical and/or Aerospace Engineering or Doctoral degree or equivalent in the appropriate field depending on department needs and qualifications to prepare and deliver to student’s in specialty college courses.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent teaching ability.
  • A commitment to the success of our students and programs.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in mechanical and aerospace engineering or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex engineering concepts clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing and delivering innovative instructional materials, including the effective use of instructional technology.
